The game is called Headbanz and the package says for age 7+. I have my doubts. It should be a range, like 7 - 32. Because 45 is defintely pushing it.
In short, you put a headband thingie on, and when it's your turn another player slips a card with a picture of something into it. Everyone can see the something but you. You ask the other players, in turn, yes or no questions until you guess what the thing is on the card. It could be anything - a turkey, a pencil, or a bicycle. You have about 2 minutes to guess.
What it has taught me is that deductive reasoning does not come naturally to my people. But luck, apparently, does. Boo, for example won her round with this stunning display:
Boo: Can I swim?
Me: Yes!
Boo: Am I a backpack?
The Daddy: Huh? Nooooo-.
Boo: Am I a pencil?
Peanut: No!
Boo: Am I a hippo?
Me: [Snort] Yes! How the heck did you figure out hippo?!
Peanut used similar logic, but with less luck.
Memory is also key. I got it right about 50% of the time; I struggled with tracking my factoids and ate most of my time asking the same questions twice and getting "you asked that already!" answers from my smarty-pants children.
The Man got his about 75% of the time, but he blames me for the failure rate. I struggle with the yes/no part. Really! It's harder than you think! If the picture is a unicorn, and he asks me "Am I alive?", what am I supposed to answer? Unicorns are fictional! They can't be alive! But I think it was my eating up his guessing time going, "Yes! Um. I mean, No! Uh. Wait. I'm not sure," that exasperated him. The timer adds a lot of pressure for me.
And for Pete's sake, once and for all - is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?! And if the ladder in the picture is clearly made of wood, is it wrong to answer "no" to "Am I made of metal?"? These are the issues that plague me.
So yes, game night will continue. I get the whole bonding thing, and it is fun. Really. I don't have to win to have fun. Much. However, I think Headbanz is heading to the Auntie's house to live, and next week we'll play a new game.I just can't take the pressure.
So, hmmm. New game? How old do the kids have to be before we can teach 'em craps?
Start with blackjack. Helps with their math too.
